The Week of Weeks is Here!!

It has been a beautiful spring in Augusta, with flowering trees and shrubs really putting on a show! Is it any wonder that the Christian Church has situated its celebration of Easter “on the Sunday after the full moon that occurs on or after the spring equinox on March 21st, a date which is fixed in accordance with an ancient ecclesiastical computation, and which does not correspond to the astronimical equinox.” (BCP page 880).

Well, astronomical equinox or not, the resurrection of Jesus from the dead is the definitive, screaming sign of his vindication as God’s messiah, the only Savior and Redeemer of the whold world. For the follower of Jesus, his resurrection is a metaphor for the rising to new life daily, until we attain the real rising to eternal life that awaits us at the end of our lives.

Holy Week, (April 14-21) is our commemoration and contemplation of the climactic events of the last week of Jesus’ life that culminates in God’s victory over sin and death, and our redemption. Whether you have kept Lent or not, just as with your salvation, it is not too late to enter into and participate in these observances of God’s mighty and wondrous love.

This week begins with Palm Sunday, April 14. We will join our friends from Reid Memorial Presbyterian and Woodlawn United Methodist at the Alan Fuqua Center for a joint service blessing the palms at 9:45 a.m. before processing to our own churches for regular worship.

Please worship with us in as many of the Holy Week services as you can, but you should all make a special effort for the sacred three days:

  • Maundy Thursday: 7:00 p.m.
  • Good Friday:  12:00 noon, 1:00 p.m. Stations of the Cross, 7:00 p.m
  • Easter Sunday: 8:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 11:15 a.m, 6:00 p.m.
Holy week is but one way we follow the example of Jesus, who, though Lord of the universe, humbled himself to become our friend and brother. And because of th
at, April 14, 2019 God raised him up and exalted him so that, at the Name of Jesus, every knee shall bow, every tongue confess that Christ is Lord, and in him, God is glorified. His promise to us is that if we humble ourselves and follow his Way, we too shall share in his glory. And that would be life indeed!
